Two of the most important choices in any foam insert are density and thickness. Get them right and your product is well protected at a sensible cost; get them wrong and you risk damage or wasted material. Here is how to choose.
What Foam Density Controls
Density refers to how much material is packed into the foam. Higher-density foam is firmer and supports more weight; lower-density foam is softer and lighter. Density determines how well the foam resists compression and protects heavier products.
- Higher density: firmer support, better for heavy or rigid products.
- Lower density: softer cushioning, lighter weight, lower cost for light items.
What Thickness Controls
Thickness sets how much cushioning sits between your product and the outside of the box. More thickness absorbs more shock from drops and impacts, but also uses more material and space.
